Weekends and Leoism

The past few weekends have been eventful for the Leos of 306A1 and A2.

Club/Council installations were held/are being held with much preparation.

To top it up the DCL of A2 decided to treat the past and present council officers (and other wellwishers) at home sweet home.

We arrived at his residence and was greeted with tabla/violin/serpina music accompanied by a stray guitar or two.

The seating arrangement was on padurus(mats) and a wall to lean on for the lucky ones.

The music was mostly led by Tharanga (a.k.a Hitler) and Mala/Deshapp. Everyone enjjjjjjjoyed the tabla performance by Tharanga's lil bro.

Dinner too was in oriental style with Egg Hoppers (there was a queue near the stove) manioc from Moragahahena and Kadala.

The affair ended around 1130 for most and 230 for the others :)

Three cheers to our DCL for hosting a wonderful evening!

The newly born Leo Club of Moragahahena inaugurated a project with a difference yesterday. A Osu Uyana containing many rare herbal plants was initiated at the Moragahahena Sunethraramaya. According to the Club president Chathura, maintenance of the Uyana will be split among the members, Longevity of the Osu Uyana will be achieved thus.

The Leo Club of Colombo (Host), the oldest Leo Club in Sri Lanka, created yet another record last week by becoming the first Leo Club in 306A1 to successfully host Leos from abroad on an official youth exchange programme. The 2 Leos, Leo Raman Bhattarai and Leo Prabha Shakya from the Leo Club of Kathmandu Ring Road, Leo District 325 A, Nepal arrived in Sri Lanka on the 7th of December on the invitation of the Colombo (Host) Leos.

They were well taken care of during their stay and almost all the Leos of Colombo (Host) pitched in any way that they could to make their Nepali colleagues welcome.

The visitors were taken to many of Colombo's interesting places including the Gangaramaya Temple, Independence Square and the Galle Face Green, which became a favourite place for the guests since they were 'experience' an ocean for the first time in their lives! The visit to Kandy was a memorable one too since Leo Prabha had never before travelled on a train!

The guests really enjoyed the time we spent at the Jayasekara Girls Home, where the Leo Club of Colombo (Host) conduct the monthly screening of a movie and the birthday celebrations of the girls. They also met up with 306A1 District Governor Lion Lalith De Silva, District President Leo Nilanka Fernando and the District Chairman for Leos Lion Kanchana Wijayaratne, before making a special guest appearance at the Installation Ceremony of Leo District Council 306A2. Their last day was spent in Galle where they visited the Galle Fort and saw some of the Tsunami devastated areas.

Leo Raman also presented IPMP Leo Shehan Kumar with US $ 101 as the Nepali Leos contribution towards the Leo Tsunami relief fund.

Many thanks to Leo Dharshan Gajendradas, Multiple President Leo Hashika Wijesinghe and ILO Lion Manjula Wijesundera for hosting the visiting Leos for lunch / dinner.

Special thanks should go to Leo Aslam Mohideen (Director of the Leo Club of Colombo Host) for taking good care of our friends by being their tour guide for 3 complete days! Thanks also to Leos of Colombo (Host) - Ricky Simms and Ashim Kamboj, Leo Advisor Lion Miraz Mukthar, for hosting them for lunch/ Dinner, Leos Dhashanthie Gamalatge, Chaminee Fernando, Imran Mohideen, and Ashan Kumar for making our guests feel at home.

Hopefully we should be able to visit Nepal early next year !

OK, for those of you who haven't heard.. the jungle previously named 306A has been divided to two A1, A2 for better administration purposes..
and A2 recently saw the taking over of duties by a new tarzan..
everyone who attended the ceremonial taking over, i must say did have a jolly good time with a good ole PDG from UK lightening up the mood.
Right now planning has begun for the most anticipated event of the year the 'CAMP' . its held at Subodhi, leos from A1, A2 as well as from a few districts in some far away lands are expected to take part..hmmmmmm
Amasai <'godeyyy'> and his pal are supposed to organise the events.. will have an update on the mischief they have lined up for u guys..

FIrst, it was the Council Meeting held next to the Bolgoda. Cool Breeze, Morning Sunshine. Hmm lots of new faces.

Next, it was ice breaking time..!!

We were all put into groups of 6,7,8 n the groups had to come up with a Name and a 'Sound' to mark their presence.

well the groups were Vibrators, Makkas, One Shot, Oi', Cha Gundis and ...........

Weird noises were made.

We played. (Crossing the lava river on a Magic Carpet, Make the longest chain with watever u have -belts, yups t-shirts hmmm, Secret Passing, Dodge Ball , Fill-in-the-Story:Hilarious and I-dont-know-the-name-but-all-of-us-had-to-stand-on-a-brick-game)

We ate. (A scrumptious Sri Lankan Buffet)

We had fun. (Met old friends -Dan the man made a surprise entrance, and new - there were leo prospects from vidyaloka)

‘Avyaaja’ is an annual childcare project organised by the Leo Club of Colombo (Host), District 306A1, Sri Lanka.

In Sinhalese, the word ‘Avyaaja’ means ‘Candid’. And that’s exactly what this project does every year - bringing out the candid expressions and ideas of kids who are less privileged than us.

Avyaaja 1 - Peace of Art Through the Eyes of Innocence - 2003

An exhibition of art by socially deprived children of Batticaloa and Seeduwa was held on the 22^nd and the 23^rd of November 2003 at the Indian Cultural Centre Colombo 04. More than 50 young kids from war-torn areas of Batticaloa and 25 under-privileged kids from Seeduwa were brought down to Colombo for this exhibition.

This was a joint project of the Leo Club of Colombo (Host) and Four Seasons - a non-profit social organization that works to protect and improve the quality of life of socially deprived children in Sri Lanka. The main sponsor for this event was Ram Bros. while Travel Sri Lanka were the co-sponsors. All profits gained through this project were used for the benefit of these poor kids.

Avyaaja 2 - Forgiveness Through the Eyes of a Child - 2004

This was an evening of variety entertainment held at the YMBA Auditorium in Borella. Orphans from the Sanhinda Boys’ Home Kollupitya, Lankadhaara Girls’ Home Wellawatte, and the St. John’s Girls Home Moratuwa displayed how they saw the theme of forgiveness through their eyes. It was an evening of drama, song and dance with some kids from the New Covenant Church Kirullapone also joining in on the fun and entertainment.

The main sponsor for this event was Favourites Hanwella and all proceeds were used to purchase dry rations and other utensils for these 3 institutions.

World Children's Day Celebrations

The Leo Club of Colombo (Host) made the 1st of October very special for the Girls at Jayasekara orphanage Colombo 06. It was an evening of fun and fellowship which most of our Leos enjoyed to the max!!! all in all a fab event...

Camp Fire night… in the beginning…

Leo Ihsaan Mohideen together with Leo Ashan Kumar prepared and arranged the firewood properly prior to the campfire night. The girls were eagerly waiting for the much look forward event, which was once in a lifetime experience for all of them. When it was time our club President Leo Ricky Simms did the honours of lighting of the firewood. This was followed by the welcome address by the project chairman Leo Ashan Kumar, while he was welcoming all of the participants IPMP Leo Shehan Kumar distributed the song sheets to all the children and the Leos.

Sing-along everybody around the fire …

Soon after the welcome address the Children joined in singing songs very merrily and our Leos also clapped along singing around the campfire, which gave the perfect camping atmosphere on the very serene environment at the orphanage premises. Next it was time for a special entertainment item. IPMP Leo Shehan Kumar chipped in creating “Wassa” by clapping hands trying to spoil the fire, it sounded exactly like actual rain and the children enjoyed it very much.

After the rain had stopped it was time for a game, courtesy our very own District Vice President Leo Dhashanthie Gamalatge it was time to “break the tail” otherwise known as “Nati Kedima” the much enthusiastic Leos also joined this event, within 10 seconds everybody was running all over trying to grab each others paper tails while saving their own. It was fun to the extreme as everybody had so much fun.

Well it was time for some entertainment courtesy our IPP Leo Anthony Sepion who provided some beautiful guitar music whilst the children continued to sing on joyfully. After that it was a special item by Leo Ihsaan Mohideen, he made everybody turn to stone using his magic sheet, and well little Achini got to know that it was a prank after all. It was game time again, it was passing the pillow time. Leo Anthony provided the guitar music as everybody passed the pillow in a hurry, and our Leos didn’t know that they had to perform what the audience asked them to do when caught with the pillow once the music stopped. It was fun! Everybody had a laugh seeing the Leos and also the children perform. In the end it was little Sewwandhi who won the event.

Well it was time to give some gifts for the winners of both games which was over, 1^st and 2^nd place prizes was handed over by District Vice President Leo Dhashanthie Gamalatge and IPP Leo Anthony Sepion. Everybody joined in for another round of sing-along, and the children performed a special song very gleefully.

Time for yet another game. All of us had to stay motionless, “Statue” was the name of the game, when Leo Anthony stopped the music the children tried their best to stay calm but a few failed and in the end it was little Mihiri who won the event. The winners received their prizes from our President Leo Ricky Simms and the children who didn’t win any event also received gifts courtesy Leo Asitha Pinnaduwa. Next it was a special item by IPMP Leo Shehan Kumar it was magic time. Leo Dharshan Gajendradas got the better of it in the end.

We were all feeling hungry by this time, so all helped them selves to a scrumptious dinner consisting of string hoppers, fish and dhal. Everyone enjoyed the hearty meal and the desert provided by our Leo advisor Lion Miraz Mukthar.

Well it was getting fairly late so we decided to wrap the programme up by singing the last song “Lowe Saema” creating the sense of unity amongst everyone. The club donated toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap for 2 months to the caretaker, the honours were done by or Leo advisor Lion Miraz Mukthar, President Leo Ricky Simms and project chairman Leo Ashan Kumar.

It all ended and all of us went our own ways thinking of the joyous moments....

Ladies and gentlemen of the class of '97: Wear sunscreen:

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.

Don't worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blind side you at 4 pm on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing every day that scares you.

Sing.

Don't be reckless with other people's hearts. Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Floss.

Don't waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself.

Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.

Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements.

Stretch.

Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40 year olds I know still don't know.

Get to know your parents. You never know when they'll be gone for good.

yesterday was the Moratuwa/Rat Installation ceremony. It was bye-bye to outgoin president Leo Roberto Jaliel and time to hail in the new President Shehan Bola-Bola.
Among the happenings of the evening was our dear friend Dharshan Gajens felicitation "Robin's like a brother to me. Once he came to our house and told my mom that her coffee was nice.. my mom said that he is the only person who has told her so" :D
also it was time to say goodbye to dearest darling Uncle Sam, as he was not continuing to be the Leo Advisor ..
all in all the evening was an eventful pleasant evening ..

with the conclusion of the district conference, the last major event for the leo year 2004/2005, we bid goodbye to our beloved district 306A. this ofcourse was done in style the leo way :)) the conference was held at the BMICH and started off with the business sessions..chief guest for this session was Shyana akki. to start off the session the driving officers of all leo clubs belonging to the district got their opportunity to come into the limelight..during the necrology we took a moment to remember the leos who were no more with us, especially leo mahesh. Next ofcourse came the speeches. Shyana akki gave an amazingly inspirational speech on honour and integrity, everyone was quite moved!.
next up was the much awaited awards ceremony.. the shining stars of 306A got to come forward to take bow during this session. after the many speeches by the DS, the DCL, the governor, governors/DP elect for A1 and A2 and tarzan himself. Leo Kanishka Hewage, the awards ceremony began. congrads to DP elect A1 leo Nilanka and vice president elect leo dhash. three cheers!!

It was officially announced by Presi of Orient Leo Osa with the lighting of crackers.The CG DP was bought in a cart(gon Karaththaya) with all pretty Leo ladies around him. He was welcomed by project chairman and the official oil lamp was lit by the council officers.
Historical game "eluwan kannai man aawe" was played by all Leos. Thiru was the first goat and Kanishka who was the kotiya managed to catch thiru in few minutes. The secong goat dash managed to get away from osa who was the kotiya.
Kabadi was played where "Moratuwa" team managed to win the tournament. Dashanthi managed to mark moratuwa at moratuwa in " Lankaawe moratuwa lakunu kireema" where others marked Kandy,Jafna as moratuwa in the SL map.
Lokuma boruwa was said by DP which was " mama gaanu lamainta kamathi naa" obviously managed to win the price as everyone knows how untruthful it is. Lokuma hinaawa was from Ashi of CMB Mill and biggest cry was from Hiru who started crying saying " I dont have a boyfriend".
Avurudu kumari was Aruni (moratuwa Orient) who was crowned by last year's avurudu kumari, thiru.Avurudu kumaaraya was SRK, Shehan who managed to defeat all handsome guys ( SRK with his new achievement will no wonder grab more attention from ladies)
It was fun and entertaining and very colourful with all beautiful sinhala clothes. Girls were enjoying through out with the onchillaawa and rabaana was played from time to time.

Leo Mahesh - An Appreciation

I didn't really know him, but it was obvious that he was a bright individual. I remember him as a person who actively took part in all activities in the youth camp held few weeks ago. I remember him playing 'Babalage Thatha' in romeo and juliet and his virindu singing in the last item, the kelaa paththare. It's really sad that in that fatal hour his life was snatched away so fatefully.
Leo Mahesh you will live in our memories forever.

Leo District 306A and Multiple District 306 mourn the tragic demise of one of its best and most talented Leos.

Leo Mahesh Prasanna Abeywickrema, President of the Leo Club of the University of Moratuwa was on a University batch trip to the Aberdeen Falls, Ginigathhena when the sand dune he was standing on collapsed, engulfing Mahesh and another student from the university in sand and water. After a frantic search, their colleagues had recovered Mahesh's body and rushed him to the nearest hospital. He breathed his last on his way to the hospital. The lifeless body of his colleague was recovered more than 40 mins afterwards.

A Charter Member of the Leo Club of the University of Moratuwa, Leo Mahesh was a very active Leo right from his induction. He was elected as the Club President for the current Leoistic year, and led the club in an outstanding manner. His leadership skills and commitment to the movement saw Leo Mahesh being awarded the 'Leo Star' during this year. He was a brilliant scholar and an outstanding speaker. His talents were well exposed at the Leo Camp held just a couple of weeks ago.

Life is too short my friends...it's just too short...Make the most of it !

I will be out of Colombo during the coming weekend heading towards Rathkinda for the long holidays..

The Leo Campo 2005 was awesome, wicked and smashing!!!!!...

It was FUN FUN FUN FUN and FUN!!! Everybody without a doubt enjoyed the whole programme to the utmost...everybody played their part..be it organizing be it just participating..:P
I really enjoyed every moment of the camp...met alot of new friends...hope next years camp will come soooon:)
